Disk Story Privacy Policy

About this policy

This policy explains how Disk Story handles information when you use the Windows desktop app. Disk Story is a folder-size and storage-history utility published by Mablook.

Information used by the app

You choose which folders to track. To calculate their sizes, Disk Story enumerates file and folder metadata in those locations using your Windows account's access permissions. This includes paths, names, file sizes, and attributes needed to determine which entries can be measured safely.

Disk Story does not read the contents of your documents, images, videos, or other scanned files. It skips links and entries with cloud-recall attributes rather than requesting their contents.

The app stores your tracked folder names and paths, scan dates, aggregate sizes and file counts, immediate subfolder names and paths, coverage information, alert rules and alert records, and scanning preferences. It does not store an inventory of every individual file name. Folder paths can contain personal information, such as your Windows account name or names you have given to folders.

Purpose and local storage

Disk Story uses this information to display current sizes, compare scans, draw your history, and evaluate your growth alerts. The information is stored on your computer. The app does not send your paths, scan history, or settings to Mablook or another service.

Disk Story protects newly saved state and its previous-state backup using the Windows Data Protection API for the current Windows user. The protected history is intended to be reopened by Disk Story under the same Windows account. The app does not promise that copying these files to another account or computer will make them readable there. Keep access to the Windows account associated with the history.

This protection does not prevent software running under your Windows account from accessing information that account can decrypt. Windows account security and permissions on the storage folder remain important. Do not place the history folder in a shared or synchronized location unless you intend copies of it to be available there.

If you open an unencrypted history created by an earlier version, reading it does not rewrite it. The next successful save protects the new state and the retained previous-state backup. Copies of older history files that you made elsewhere are not changed by this migration.

Open Preferences and use Open history folder to find the actual storage location used by your installation. The default desktop location is %LOCALAPPDATA%\Mablook\DiskStory; Windows packaging may redirect local app storage. A custom --data-dir option changes the location for that launch.

Retention and your controls

Disk Story keeps the most recent 720 scans plus older daily reference scans within 35 days of the latest scan, up to 756 scans in total. When you stop scanning, existing history remains until you remove it. The app also retains up to 500 alert records and the previous state-file backup.

You can remove a folder from tracking and disable automatic scanning. Removing a tracked folder stops future scans of that folder and removes its active alert rule; it does not remove the folder's files or erase its earlier snapshots and alerts.

To remove all locally saved Disk Story history and settings, first use Open history folder in Preferences to locate the app's data, then close Disk Story. Delete the app's state.json, state.json.bak, and any copies of these history files that you made. This resets Disk Story's saved state when you next open it. Only delete Disk Story's history files, not the folders you tracked. Removing the app and clearing its data may behave differently depending on the distribution format; do not rely on uninstalling alone to erase every copy you made.

You can review your recorded sizes, comparisons, and alerts inside Disk Story and locate the saved files through Preferences. You may keep a private backup of those files, but the protected state is not an editable JSON export and is not intended for transfer between Windows accounts or computers.

Network services and third parties

Disk Story has no account system, cloud synchronization, advertising, analytics, or telemetry. It does not share information between users. Automatic scans run only while Disk Story is open.

Windows and the Microsoft Store may process information independently when you obtain, install, update, or use software. Their own policies govern that processing. Backup, synchronization, security, or other software you choose to run on your computer may also access local files under its own settings and policies.

Changes and contact

Mablook will update this policy when Disk Story's information practices change. The effective date above identifies this version of the policy.
